Smittys Rancho and You – Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

I don’t know about any of you, but for me  “a good night’s sleep” is often one of those elusive ghost-like things that people talk about but I don’t get to experience up close and personal very often…. well… maybe if I’m really, really tired I do…

These days there are so many things that cause us stress, that getting enough sleep can be a real challenge.  From money concerns to relationships and work, the stressors are all around us creating internal conflicts to the point where our brains are in overload mode all day long, and we don’t know how to slow them down when it comes time to turn-in at the end of the day.

As I did a bit of reading to prepare for this blog, I was surprised to find out that there are actually places called ‘catnap rooms’ that can be rented by the minute.  Sheesh, I would go broke before I ever fell asleep in a situation like that – imagine laying there knowing you are paying (by the minute) and NOT being able to fall asleep!  Talk about an additional stressor.  No thanks.

(WebMD “Good Sleep: Can it Still be Simple”)

From eye masks and white noise generators, to special mattresses and sleep aids, for some, the pursuit of a good night’s sleep can become something close to obsessive.  Not to mention expensive.  For me personally to fall asleep I need two things, a good book and something comfy to sleep in… and while neither is a guarantee, it usually works eventually.

When I was little my Gramma used to buy me these long flannel nightgowns that were absolutely hideous to wear if you planned on doing any moving whatsoever while in bed.  Those darn things were soft as anything, but without fail I would find myself all tangled up with the nightgown halfway up my body creating an uncomfortable lump somewhere in the vicinity of my waist… you know the one’s I’m talking about.  When it comes to me and pajamas, less is definitely more!

For research purposes, I did a Pintrest search on “1890’s Sleepwear” to check out what some of our ancestors wore when they laid down for the night.

Here’s a little of what I found.

If you have read some of the previous posts I have written in here, (see ”Smittys Rancho and You – Poolside (6/15/14) and  “Mid-Summer Lingere Spotlight” (7/20/14), you know I’m not a fan of yards and yards of fabric and lace all over my person…. when it comes to sleepwear – all I can say is ditto.

Lucky for us, Smittys Rancho, and Wilderness Dreams understands a thing or two about sleeping in comfort.

Let me show you two of my favorites from the website.

For summertime, there’s the Baby Doll Lingerie Set available in three colors – naked north pink, naked north snow, and mossy oak breakup.   This two piece soft & sheer set will keep you nice and cool and is a lil sexy to boot.

And when temperatures start to get cooler (here in Ohio – that’s just around the corner), my favorite is the Wilderness Dreams Henley Night Shirt.  This awesome night shirt is mid thigh length – so we don’t get all tangled up in it – and it has three quarter length sleeves so your shoulders stay warm while you read that latest best-seller before bedtime.

This night shirt comes in two camo patterns – mossy oak break up, and naked north snow.  Did I mention it is made from a soft and silky polyester fabric?  Cozy!

Late Summer Spotlight on Water

Some interesting facts about water:

  1. Roughly 70 percent of an adult’s body is made up of water.
  2. By the time a person feels thirsty, his or her body has lost over 1 percent of its total water amount.
  3. The average person in the United States uses anywhere from 80-100 gallons of water per day.
  4. Approximately 85 percent of U.S. residents receive their water from public water facilities. The remaining 15 percent supply their own water from private wells or other sources.
  5. The earth is a closed system, similar to a terrarium, meaning that it rarely loses or gains extra matter. The same water that existed on the earth millions of years ago is still present today.

(20 Interesting and Useful Water Facts)

On the subject of water, when we were kids, we used to read fables by Aesop – the one I’m thinking about in particular today is the situation faced by a thirsty crow. This animal came upon a pitcher that had water in the bottom of it but he could not get at the water because the neck of the pitcher was too long for him to reach. He came up with the solution to place pebbles into the pitcher in order to raise the level of the water to a reasonable height so he could get a drink. Problem solved.

For most of us, the solution to being thirsty is usually pretty easy to remedy (without the pebbles) just walk over to a tap and fill your glass… but what if the water from your tap is not potable today?  There are many conditions that could adversely affect the drinking water in your home and place of business; water main breaks, weather events like flooding, and even routine repairs.  Or maybe you frequently travel abroad or are planning a trip… Are you prepared for a water crisis?

Here at Smittys Rancho, we are happy to provide four solutions to the problem of contaminants in drinking water – all of them manufactured by Sawyer Products

For a big-time – family size water crisis, there is the ‘Point One All-in-One Filter’. This versatile system can be attached to you home faucet, attached to the included squeeze pouches, or even works with a five gallon container rigged-out for the system.

 all in one system

For couples, I would suggest the ‘Complete 2-Liter Water Treatment System’. This is a gravity fed system that you simply fill, hang, and use when you’re ready.  This system will filter 1.5 liters of water per minute, making it quick and convenient to use.

2 liter system

For personal use during your water crisis, try the ‘Four-Way Water Treatment System’.  This compact system is great for a temporary water crisis – like a routine shut down for repairs at work.

And finally – there’s the ‘Mini Water Filtration System’ which is super compact (at 2oz) and can fit in the palm of your hand for camping/hiking water crisis events.

“Sawyer’s proprietary hollow fiber membrane filters are small, portable, easy-to-use, reliable, inexpensive, and can last a decade without needing to be replaced.

Their filters are certified for ABSOLUTE microns making it impossible for harmful bacteria, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giradia, Vibrio cholerae and Salmonella typhi (which cause Cholera and Typhoid) to pass through”.

And maybe best of all – these products come with a one MILLION gallon guarantee!

Here’s a great video of these products in action so you may see how easy and versatile they are to use.

Heading Back to School in Style

As the dog days of August quickly pass us by, kids of all ages are looking towards going back to school with a mixture of anticipation, trepidation, and excitement of what the unknown will bring.  Friends they have not seen all summer will become their daily companions again, new kids moved into the area since spring will be there to be checked out, and even the odd teacher or two may have been replaced with another academic professional… so many interesting things could happen!

Back when I was a school age girl there was always a big flurry of activity right before heading back to school.  New clothes and shoes had to be purchased since we’d undoubtedly outgrown most of last year’s things… school supplies derived from a list sent out to parents in advance needed to be selected, book bags were purchased to haul everything in, and sometimes even a special accessory like jewelry or a cute purse was thrown in for good measure.

I remember the agonizing challenge of deciding what to wear on the first day since it was such a huge event in our young lives.  Something simple such as wearing the wrong shoes or top could bring unwanted attention, so everything had to be just right.

I don’t envy today’s kids when it comes to going back to school since they seem to have a level of sophistication and discriminative taste we did not have back in the day.  The internet has played a major role when it comes to fashion selection, and attire from around the world is there for all to see with just a click of a button.

So how can we at Smittys Rancho help your youngster (or you) with the process of heading back to school for a new year?  Well, in short, we offer a nice selection of quality items that will help you stand out in the crowd (or maybe blend in if it’s made of camo… wink).

Brand new and just in time for back to school, I want to show you our latest ‘Smittys Rancho’ brand item – the Camo Clutch with Bow.  These clutches are big enough to carry your most important items and small enough to grab and go when you don’t want to be encumbered with a big purse.

They come in many color combinations, so click on one of the pictures and select your favorite.  Oh, and I almost forgot to mention – they can be personalized with your initials.
